Beautiful India - Two month as volunteer teacher.
My humanitarian mission in India was part of my first year program, two months compulsory where we should have been working as volunteer. On a whim and after exchanging some e-mails with the president of a French humanitarian association in Dehra Dun in the north of Delhi, I decided to go there with one of my friend, Quentin Berson who have already been twice beforehand.
The French association is directed by Claudine Pons and co-directed by Apoorv Joshi, an Indian. You will find the website here (in French). The school has his own building where each day more than thirty children from the Dehradun slums come in mini-bus financed by the association to have some classes provided by paid teachers (financed by donation) and volunteers. Few children privileged can stay all the week in the school and have some extra-classes the afternoon.
I have been in charge of a class of around twelve children from 11 to 13 years old. The morning from 8 to 12 am, we thought class of English and mathematics mainly. The afternoon and during two hours, I had my own student “Pooja a brilliant student, you were learning more content in a private teaching lesson.
We introduce some classes of “general knowledge” hence we printed some world map and we spoke mainly about geographical borders of India and the different continents.
We also had some outdoor activities in the school court and in a park close to the school.
I learned a lot from this experience that I strongly recommend to every person who will work one day in a business work place. I came back in France with another vision of the world and with humility.
