Why the result are good? Only a coincidence?
I will provide you some keys to understands why Finnish Students have always good result in PISA survey.
First of all, they spend less time in class but when they are in class they focus more in what the teacher is saying and in the other hand, the teacher is not trying only to give theoretical knowledge but, they try to develop the creativity of the students.
Principally, they are doing well because they hire very good teachers. Indeed, in Finland teaching is very respected just as doctors and lawyers what is not necessary the case in others countries. All the teacher need at least a Master degree, the competition is very rough, only one in ten applicants are accepted to primary school teacher training program.
In addition they require high qualified candidate and they are especially focused in how they are teaching not only the subject in himself. Besides, experienced teachers are also required to analysis how she/he is teaching and what she/he can change to constantly improve. Moreover, they don’t have to worry about how they are teaching, they don’t have standard, the students are freer and can use more their creativity what is a powerful tool for a company. The teachers are autonomous a thing possible because they are higly qualied and they have hire the best one We can also note that the Finnish teacher use to stay in their profession all their life which mean professors with huge experience an opportunity for the students. In America for example the turnover is seven times higher.
This result can also be explained by a certain homogeneity, in Finland only 4% of the children student are poor while in USA for example, they are more than 20% with people from different origin and with different languages. In this case is harder to study in good condition because your parents don’t have maybe the time to worry about your education and offer you a good assistance in your study and the fact that the level of the class is low because the people come from many origin can be a serious threat for a good apprenticeship.
To conclude, Finnish students are doing well and excels in education because they have less classes so when they are going, they can be well focused in. They have more autonomy, so they feel more comfortable and responsible to study hard because they know that it's for themselves, their future. In addition, the poverty in the country is very low so the student are in a good climate in class and the parents push them to study well and can send them abroad to study. Moreover, the teacher are very strictly selected, the profession is very prestigious in Finland and they are autonomous, three factors which are playing a main role in students well learning.
